Linda is one of the dedicated life-long cooks at the market, having joined us after retiring from a cooking profession 10 years ago. She is also one of our best and biggest producers of homemade meals and savoury snacks. The chance are that if you have bought a 'ready meal' from us that it was made in Linda's kitchen.
We thought it might be nice to get to know Linda a bit more....
What do you make for the market?
Soups, cottage pie, mousska, chicken dishes, fridget pie, fish pie and more.... And I also make long-life re-usable (bees wax coated) food wrap.
What's your best seller?
Fish pie.
What's your favourite thing to bake for market?
Anything different. As well as the staple dishes mentioned above, Linda often cooks a large variety of other meals on a less frequent basis, makes own Elderflower cordial and butter scotch sauce and more... She told me she used to make more meat dishes (pork goulash being one) but they don't sell so well now and so rarely makes them.
What’s your favourite (post market) Friday night drink?
A cup of coffee
Do you listen to or watch anything in particular while cooking for market?
I have a little TV in the kitchen and I watch (too much) daytime Tv (homes under the hammer, bargain hunt....) while cooking!
What’s the one piece of kitchen equipment you couldn’t do without?
Kenwood food mixer and 'a good set of knives'
Dishwasher or hand wash?
Hand wash
Marmite lover or hater?
Lover. I had 'marmite toast' this morning for breakfast. To me it's a comfort food as Mum used to make us marmite soldiers when we were ill as children.
Ever get fed up of cooking and sink for beans on toast?
No as I hate baked beans but I do get fed up and have cheese and crackers or sandwiches sometimes.
Favourite TV Chef?
I like Rich Stein; like Nigella's recipes but not a fan of her; not really a 'Jamie' fan.
Tea lover or Coffee Consumer
Coffee. I only like tea without milk and EXTREMELY weak.
One food that you really detest
Tripe
Favourite season/time of year
Autumn- I'm an 'October baby'
Favourite colourRed
Favourite Books
Historical novels and particularly those by the author Dorothy Dunnett
What do you have for Christmas dinner and who cooks?
I cook, even when it isn't in my house! Traditional turkey, ham, several different types of stuffing, pigs in blankets, vegetables.... the works. I do cook a Christmas pudding but I don't like it much and so also do some oranges with cinnamon with rum sauce (I don't like brandy butter)
Favourite Animal
Pigs
X-factor or Strictly Come Dancing
Neither really as my husband doesn't like them, but I try to catch a bit of Strictly while having dinner on Saturdays!
Secret Housework lover or hater
Hater.
A big thankyou to Linda for her time and giving us a snapshot of her 'market' life. You can find a selection of her products each week at the market or they can be ordered in advance by phone ( 07514 060548 ).
